This project is being sponsored by FamilyTreeDNA. The program Administrator is Virgil McVicker, coordinator of the Clan McVickers.
This project is intended to utilize Y-chromosome DNA testing as a tool for genealogical research on surname MacVicar and its variations.
Human gender is genetically determined by a pair of chromosomes that are, by convention, designated XX (for females) and XY (for males). Only males have the Y-chromosome, and because the male Y-chromosome is handed down intact from father to son through the generations (except for rare mutations), DNA testing can identify and distinguish ancestors on the direct male line.
If you are researching any of these surnames, please consider having a male family member submit a sample to the project. The more participants we have, the more we will learn about our origins!
